Echo: Finnish Teachers Boosts Healthcare

"Finnish teachers have visited Cork College of Commerce in a bid to promote the social and healthcare profession as an official skill in the WorldSkills Competition.

Teachers in Cork College of Commerce participated in a presentation given by Finnish teachers, Virpi Salminen and Maarit Saarenklä from OMNIA Espoo Institute of Health and Social Care in Finland.

Finland made a successful presentation at the WorldSkills Competition in Japan last year.

Now they are seeking eight supporting countries to submit entries from the social and healthcare profession for the next WorldSkills Competition to be held in Calgary, Canada in 2009.

“Every two years the WorldSkills Competition challenges hundreds of young people from around the world to come together and test their technical skills and creativity, while also acting as an international forum for friendship and exchange of knowledge and experience over four days of intense competition,” said a spokesperson for the college.

In Japan 63 countries represented around 43 different vocational skills.

Ireland hosted the WorldSkills competition in 1963 and 1979.

Jennifer Lyons, a student at the college, represented Ireland in the competition in Japan in the area of beauty therapy skills."
